Healthy fizzy drinks

I’ve never been a huge fizzy drink drinker, but sometimes it’s too hot for tea or coffee (mmm coffee), water is too boring, and I can’t be bothered making juice, or I feel something more interesting than water is expected. Like if my parents come for dinner. One time I invited Dad over while Mum was away and forgot about pudding. Big oops. Not that relevant, though.

Enter kombucha and water kefir. I did make a few batches of milk kefir back when we were getting raw milk. Lord B loved it, for a while. I couldn’t stomach it (or tongue it? it’s pretty damn sour and my tongue found it most offensive). I think my beloved husband managed a bit (he’s far less discerning – sounds better than fussy, right? – than I am). But then it kept getting forgotten and going really really sour, so I stopped making it.

I had heard about kombucha and water kefir, but I didn’t know where one got the requisite cultures to get them going. I have come across a website since, but didn’t really have money to be spending on experimental things just then. Or now.

Enter freecycle.(You should check it out if you never have.) Got some water kefir grains (for free, in case the free in freecycle didn’t tip you off) a couple of weeks ago. Hoping they’re still alive in my fridge, since I didn’t get a chance to use them. Today dear husband has picked up a kombucha scoby (how foul does that sound, right?) and some instructions.

Now all I have to do is figure out what do to with them. Enter google. I did know I’d need sugar, but I forgot to buy some and I’m not sure there’s enough in my tiny stash for tea and coffee of people who like the vile stuff. This gives me further incentive to continue procrastinating trying the water kefir. Guess I’ll see what I need for the kombucha. When I finally get anywhere, I will take photos of what I’m doing and share the results. Hopefully nothing will explode. If you’re really lucky I’ll look up definitions of these things and share those too. For now, “probiotic fizzy drink” will have to do.
